Poultry farm worker

Overview

An employee of a poultry farm participates in the daily operations of the farm. This can include checking birds, collecting eggs and feeding.

What responsibilities will I have?

Ensuring that birds have access to food and water
Walk around the house to identify sick or injured birds
Respect appropriate biosecurity standards when entering and leaving homes
In layered farms, help with the collection, washing and sorting of eggs
In layer farms, help put eggs in cartons
House temperature control for ultimate bird comfort
Maintain the house and the watering / heating system as needed
Control the lighting of the house to meet the needs of birds
Maintain high standards of animal welfare


What education and training is required?

A high school diploma is required. Although not always necessary, a degree in animal sciences or breeding would be recommended.



To pursue a career as a poultry worker:

The following secondary level courses are recommended: agricultural education, zootechnics, biology, mathematics and chemistry.



Where can I work?

Poultry farm workers are employed by farmers to work on their farms. Farms are usually under contract to grow for a retailer.
